What Does It Mean To Be a “Bad Employee?”

What does it mean to be a “BAD EMPLOYEE?”

Here’s a story that DOESN’T illustrate that. 🎥

I once hired someone that I was told wouldn’t be a good employee. In fact, I was told by his previous boss that he was a “BAD EMPLOYEE.”

I was surprised -- He had the qualifications, the glowing reviews from references, and all the right answers in the interview.

I probed his former boss more.

Turns out —

  • He wasn’t great at sales,

  • He was too worried about the details, and

  • He demanded a healthy work/life balance.

All things that either didn’t matter to the job for which he was applying or even made him a good candidate for it. So, he was hired.

And guess what?

His STRENGTHS were an excellent match to the job.

And just because he wasn’t a good fit for his last job, didn’t mean he wouldn’t kill it at the next one...WHICH HE DID!! 🎉

Something I like to say often is, "No such thing as a bad employee." Let’s stop labeling people BAD EMPLOYEES and instead start focusing on using their STRENGTHS. ☺️ 💪
