“Wench”

Let me tell you about the time I was called a “Wench” on LinkedIn and how the power of mindset came into play.

It was 2020, and it was a troubling time for me on LinkedIn.

I had been receiving a lot of unsolicited advice on my content.

In a period of 6 months or so, the most common themes were that I:

  • Wasn’t qualified

  • Was too young

  • Had a weak voice

These were almost always disguised as a well-meaning, albeit unsought piece of feedback.

One Sunday, I received a push notification that someone had commented “Wench” on my post.

I could feel my face get hot. I thought:

  1. How dare you?

  2. Why choose such an outdated word?

Since it was the weekend, I decided to save the research and stalking to Monday. However, it played as background music in my mind for the rest of the day.

As the work week started, I was ready to “deal” with the comment.

That’s when I noticed my mistake - I hadn’t been called a “Wench.” A sweet person had tagged someone with the first name “Wench” simply to share it with a friend.

That was my wake up call.

I was so conditioned to thinking that I would receive negative comments and messages that I jumped to a conclusion that sort of ruined my Sunday.

This helped me to take a break from LinkedIn for awhile and start looking more for the good instead of the bad. ☺️

May you have the wake up call you need to change your mindset when it is no longer serving you. 💚
