Struggling with holding employees accountable?

Struggling with holding employees accountable? You’re not alone.

Accountability is often discussed and rarely done well.

Failure to hold people accountable allows toxic behaviors to go unchecked. And, ultimately, can create a toxic culture.

Maybe you let things slide and then overreact. Or fear escalation because you haven’t properly tracked the process.

Either way, you need a system. A framework. The Accountability Dial.

I can’t take credit for it as it was developed by Jonathon Raymond in his book, Good Authority. But, I’ve helped many organization implement this framework and have seen great results.

It works like this — As you recognize an undesirable outcome or behavior, you turn up the volume.

  • The Mention: Quickly and casually mention that that you notice a problem.

  • The Invitation: Give them a couple of examples of how the issue has become a pattern.

  • The Conversation: More formally show how the issue is affecting them and others.

  • The Boundary: Create a concrete plan with dates and consequences.

  • The Limit: As a last effort, have one more heart-to-heart.

Having a framework like this can keep you on task. And, ultimately, lead to creating the kind of culture that people thrive in.
