You might be destroying your ability to get useful feedback from your team.

Feedback from your team is the holy grail. Not easy to find, but absolutely worth the pursuit. A good leader is not only open to feedback, but is always looking for the right feedback to better themselves and their team. However, many leaders make mistakes when it comes to getting that feedback in the first place.

Here are 4 common ways leaders get feedback wrong and what you should be doing —

  1. They can’t see that you’ve used their feedback. Instead of “I’ll take care of it,” try, “Can we work together to make this change?”

  2. You’re defensive. Instead of “I hear you, but…” try, “I hear you, and tell me more.”

  3. You don’t give them a good platform for feedback. Instead of an open door policy, try scheduled one-on-one meetings.

  4. You aren’t specific. Instead of “How’s it going?” try, “What about your work are you loving right now?”

If you find yourself saying any of these “Instead of’s…” try implementing the suggested alternatives and see if you notice a positive change in your team's communication and productivity. Remember, feedback is the holy grail, and it's worth pursuing with the right approach.
