There is always meaning in your work - even when it cannot be measured

Hand coming out of sea holding sparkle

The last time we spoke she was crying.

She didn't want to be seen as "a complainer", but others on the team had seen the way her manager had treated her and more or less forced her to speak privately with me.

She shyly shared with me the abuse she had been enduring:
-The unnecessarily long hours.
-The mental games.
-The lies.

The situation she was in was not okay. Something had to be done.

I spent hours talking with different members of management about her situation. Counseling them on how to handle the situation. Guiding their conversations with her manager.

I recently followed up with her.

Her tone had completely changed. She didn't even exactly know what or how it happened, but she said everything was going smoothly with her manager now. She was joyful and optimistic.

One of the things on my to do list this week is to work on a year-in-review document. And while I'm listing revenue goals completed and milestones achieved, it's this conversation that brings me to tears.

Something that's tough to measure.

Something that won't be checked off of my to do list.

Something that gives my work meaning.

May you find meaning in your work, even if it can't be measured.
