We need to talk — A Step-by-Step Guide to an awkward conversation.

"We need talk".

Having difficult conversations that hold employees accountable is stressful.

Here’s what you can do to keep your cool —

1. Evaluate whether the issue is really worth discussing. Don’t trust your anger. Wait until you cool down to decide to take the next step. If you still find the issue important, go to step 2.

2. Write down the problem before you have the conversation. This is for your own benefit, so make it simple. Ex - “Missing the third deadline this week.” “Failing to follow safety protocol.” This forces you to put the problem into simple terms and will keep you from rambling.

3. Find a private place for the conversation. Whether it’s in their office, your office, or video meeting, hosting the meeting in private will be better for you both.

4. Approach the person with curiosity and empathy. It’s much harder to be nervous when we’re genuine in this.

5. Focus on questions rather than talking. You could start with something like, “I’ve noticed that you’ve been missing a few deadlines lately, what’s up?” This takes pressure off you in the conversation and keeps you from making an inaccurate assumption that leads to future awkwardness / nervousness.
